Adjusting Volume

I'm returning from a 3 month layoff.  I last ran the advanced large load program and had great success with it.  Id like to stick with that program but reduce the volume a bit to ease my way into it.  Is it preferable to reduce the number of sets or the number of reps when reducing volume. 

I looked into advanced medium load but there were a ton of variations in there that i wont have access to and wasnt sure if i could just sub out the exercises while keeping the same weight.
